Still from Mallrats

Mallrats (1995)

What editions are available?

  • Theatrical (95 min.)
  • Extended (122 min.)

Director Kevin Smith took the Sundance Film Festival by storm in 1994 with the black and white comedy Clerks. It could be said that since then Smith is still trying to live up to the hype. Mallrats is the directors sophomore film and also his first studio backed production. When it was released in 1995 it bombed at the box office and only banked $2.2 million but slowly gained a cult following.

In 2004 an 10th anniversary DVD was released that included the theatrical and extended cuts of the film. The Blu-ray version also contains those two cuts. In an introduction on the DVD/Blu-ray Smith states the following:

“So basically we came up with a really long, mastercut, of Mallrats, as Scott [Mosier] says, is pretty much is taken directly from the script. This is a version of the movie, a kind of a version of version of the first version of the movie that we put before a test audience. That was like, “oh, this is fucking terrible, this is a really bad film,” so we said: that’s the movie that we present on the 10th anniversary edition. So of course we’ve included the real version, the theatrical version, which is awesome. And then we include this version, which we have taken to call “version that should never have been”. And now here it is, in your hands.”

Still from Gods and Generals

Gods and Generals (2003)

What editions are available?

  • Theatrical (229 min.)
  • Director’s Cut (280 min.)

The epic American Civil War movie Gods and Generals was released on Blu-ray in a extended director’s cut. The theatrical was also released on DVD and Blu-ray. In an introduction on the Blu-ray director, producer and screenwriter Ronald F. Maxwell talks about the extended director’s cut:

“Back in 2002 we shot about a 230-page script so we knew we were gonna have a film of epic proportions and when we cut it together, it was about five hours. We had to cut it down for theatrical release and we released three hours and 40 minutes. That, plus an intermission, made it a four-hour experience. Well, in this version, we have restored the hour that we had to take out. So this version is now four hours and 40 minutes and we divided it into five parts to suggest how the viewer could look at it…. And there are moments like that all through the film which are maybe not whole sequences the way that Antietam is but restored to the film, they bring the film back to the film that we intended. Originally scripted, shot and intended on making which fleshes out the more complete story…”

Still from Dune (1984)

Dune (1984)

What editions are available?

  • Theatrical (136 min.)
  • Extended (177 min.)
After many years in development hell producer Dino De Laurentiis hired writer-director David Lynch to adapt the Frank Herberg sci-fi novella Dune from 1965. Dune opened in cinemas in 1984 and failed to capture critics and audiences alike.  Since its release Lynch has described the film as the most painful experience in his career and declines talking about it in interviews. Dune was released in its theatrical cut on Blu-ray and DVD. An extended cut made for TV was also released on DVD and has been unavailable for a couple of years.
“Universal asked David and myself to work on a ‘long’ version of Dune to be prepared for television,” revealed Raffella De Laurentiis, “At the time David was busy and not prepared to go back to work on Dune without further financial compensation. He and Universal could not reach a financial arrangement so Universal went ahead without him and David’s name is not on the long version.”
Instead the film that Lynch adapted and directed is now credited to Alan Smithee with screenplay by Judas Booth. Fifty minutes of extra footage was haphazardly edited with additional videotaped material to create a product that has politely been described by fans as “bastardized”.

Collider: “With the special features and extras on the Limitless DVD/Blu-ray, is there anything that you’re most excited about fans of the movie getting to see?”

Neil Burger: “Well, there’s an extended cut that I’m very excited about people getting to see. The movie was intended to be an R, and then it was cut down to be PG-13, which is fine. I really liked the PG-13 version, but I love the R version. It’s much crazier, wilder, more extreme. There’s just some insane things in there, that aren’t in the PG-13 version. It’s much racier, also.”
