The Tony Scott-directed revenge thriller Revenge got mixed reviews and was underwhelming at the box office when it was released in 1990. Producer Ray Stark and Scott had a falling-out during the production due to different take on the script and direction. Stark thought Scott’s take on the material too sexual and they didn’t see eye to eye about the actual revenge itself in the story. In 2007 an unrated director’s cut of the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray. The theatrical cut is only available on DVD. In the commentary on the unrated director’s cut Scott states very early on:
“The version of Revenge that you’re about to see is the version that I always wanted to make. The version that was released in theaters was Ray Stark’s version. Ray Stark was the producer, a very famous Hollywood producer, and the final analyze is that he should never had made Revenge because it is very contrary to his taste. But the version that you’re about to see is a half hour shorter than the original released version.”
